Tips to Landing Your Dream Job in Fashion
1. Know the Trends
Being able to recognize trends isn’t limited to just clothing. Since fashion influences and is influenced by so many other industries, it’s important to know what the upcoming trends are across the map. A great way to do this is to follow fashionistas’ social media accounts and blogs.
2. Recognize Your Talents
Make a list of your strongest skills. Even if you think your talents won’t apply to a fashion job, it’s likely there’s a position available where you can put them to use. There are so many different paths within the fashion industry that your talents are bound to be utilized.
3. Have a Killer Resume
Think of having a great resume as having a perfect outfit—it will highlight your best features and will make a good first impression. Have someone look it over to make sure everything is perfect before you send it off. Make sure your resume is tailored to the job you’re applying for.
4. Take Initiative
After you apply for a job or internship, take the initiative to call and follow up. This shows you’re determined and genuinely interested in the job. It will also give you a chance to find out what qualifications they’re looking for and whether you’re seriously being considered as a candidate.
5. Interview
Take the time to prepare for every interview. You’ll be more confident if you know that you’re going to be able to answer every question without hesitation. Get to know the company you’re interviewing with. Think about what kinds of questions they may ask and prepare a few questions to ask them as well.
6. Build Your Network
A good way to begin building your network is to see whom you already know. You probably already have a friend of a friend that has a job in fashion. Ask to be introduced! Even if they can’t directly hire you, getting to know people of all levels in the industry is a step in the right direction. If you don’t know anyone in fashion, start introducing yourself to people already working in the industry.
7. Don’t Be Afraid to Start Small
Even the smaller, less prominent jobs in fashion will give you a chance to learn more about the industry. Take full advantage of every opportunity you get. Be sure to ask questions to show your desire to learn, this will give you a better understanding of your job and how the company works as a whole.
