We all love summer;  Vacations, summer activities, warm weather, and spending time outdoors. Making beautiful memories with family and friends.  But at the same time all of that great time spent outdoor leads to UVA and UVB exposure.  A little natural vitamin D is a great thing, but more than 15-20 minutes with no sunscreen and the skin begins to respond in ways that are designed to warn us that we need to get out of the sun. Depending on one’s ethnicity, different skin types react in different ways.  If you and your ancestors are Northern or Eastern European with fair skin, lighter eyes and tend towards sunburns- this is because genetically, these people didn’t spend much time in the sun due to cooler, rainy or snowy climates. There was no genetic need for the skin to produce lots of melanin (tan) as a defense against the sun’s strong rays.

For Southern Europeans, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and African skin types, strong and constant exposure to the sun created a need for a darker skin tone to deflect the sun and protect it, thus people who tan really easily or are naturally dark all of the time.  Due to mixed ethnicities, we now have a Global Heritage Model.  According to the US Census Bureau, as of 2014, Mixed-Heredity backgrounds make up 1/3 of the 30 million people in the US alone.  It is predicted that by 2050 that number will be 50%.

What does this mean from a skin care perspective?

We can no longer as easily classify the skin tones in order to assess the skin’s tendencies.  We can appear quite fair but get a great tan, or we can have a more olive looking skin but lighter hair and eyes and actually sunburn easily.  Those who tan and rarely burn tend to feel more immune to skin cancers, but with mixed heritage this can be a false sense of security.

Growing up a fair skinned red-head, I ALWAYS sunburned.  I was lucky to have a mom who tried to protect me from the sun as a child, but by the time I was a teenager, I wanted to be like all of my friends and “lay out” coated in baby oil. Basically roasting like a well oiled chicken

Even a high-quality, super expensive brand will never have the medical grade ingredients that can actually get to the dermis and correct, prevent and renew on a cellular level.

It is important to visit your dermatologist no less than once per year.  If you spend a lot of time in the sun, have any family history of skin cancer or have had previous suspicious skin lesions, you need to go every 6 months.

I have a regular, ongoing relationship with my dermatologist so that he knows if something is new, normal, or suspect.  My most recent visit required several “bumpy” spots that needed to be frozen off.  I looked like I was attacked by killer bees. It’s all due to the sunburns of my youth.  Unfortunately our culture has an obsession with tanned skin. I bought into that mentality as a youth and I am paying for it now!

Here’s how to make sure that your skin stays healthy, youthful and glowing:

  • Have a regular, professional skin care regime that includes products specifically recommended for your skin type.  Get a consultation with our clinical esthetician for a skin analysis to determine the best system for you.
  • WEAR SUNCREEN!!!  We live in California.  The sun shines almost year round.  We get damaging rays through our car windows, our home and work windows and get more exposure than those from colder, seasonal climates. There are some really great sunblocks that feel light, non-greasy, feel good alone or under makeup. Now there are cosmetics that are mineral based and have built in sunscreen properties as well. For all of you permanent makeup clients, your procedures will fade less and last longer with the daily application of sunscreen.
  • Get Regular skin check ups. Form a relationship with your dermatologist.  Don’t let a small, easily treatable situation turn into a critical, possibly life-threatening disaster.
  • Have regular professional skin treatments.  A thorough analysis of your skin by a properly trained clinical esthetician can often be that “early detection” of questionable skin issues. Treatments such as chemical peels, Metatherapy skin needling and deep cleansing/ exfoliating facials jump-starts the process of cellular renewal, encouraging the old cells to slough off, the new cells to regenerate properly and the stimulation of essential collagen and elastin to slow down the aging process of the skin. These treatments make your skin look better, feel better, and reverse the visible sun damage.
  • Live a healthy lifestyle.   Eating healthy means staying away from junk food, processed foods, chemicals in food and avoiding sugar. Eat organic whenever possible to avoid possible contamination and exposure to GMO’s, toxic pesticides, hormones and antibiotics used to treat meat and dairy. Avoid artificial sweeteners.  They are toxic on every level. To avoid sugar, use natural Stevia when the need to sweeten arises.  Eat clean.  This means the fewer ingredients there are, the healthier it is. Lean proteins, fresh veggies and fruits and lots of water will keep you fit, healthy and youthful in appearance and energy levels.  This overall optimal health will be directly reflected in the quality of your skin!
