The Perfect Dutch Braid
Step by Step with Salon 74
There are several different types of braids. We’re going to show you my personal favorite, the dutch braid. A dutch braid is an inverted french braid.
Knowing how to braid hair is a MUST! Whether your braiding your own hair, your daughter’s, niece’s hair, or maybe even a friends hair, braiding is a styling skill every woman needs to know.
Starting at the center of your hairline, grab three sections of hair.
The angle of your hands and wrists are important when it comes to a dutch braid, as it’s inverted.
Braid them underneath one another instead of over, like you would with a French braid. This is what makes the braid pop off your head, making it look 3-D.
Take small sections of hair from each side, about a half inch, pull them into and underneath the main braid.
Continue this processes while keeping your fingers tight on the braid.
QUICK TIP: If you’re having a tricky time getting the braid started, ad bobbi pins to keep the beginning of the braid tight.
Keep braiding down the back of your head, drawing in more hair from the sides as you go down and pulling the pieces tightly so the braid really pops.
Make sure that you are taking even sections on each side every time.
Keeping your sections uniform will help with the overall look of the braid.
Once you’ve finished the dutch braid secure with elastic hair tie.
It’s time to add volume and more texture to your dutch braid. Starting at the end of braid begin to slowly pull on the braid, evenly on each side, and continue to move up the braid.
Make sure not to pull too hard, but don’t be worried if a few hairs fall out, a messy braid to totally expectable and encouraged. That being said, you don’t want crazy fly-a-ways.
Now that you pulled each piece evenly….. You have the perfect, full dutch braid.
