Find the Perfect Masque for your Skin

How to Choose the right Masque for your Skin Type

with 10K Skin Studio

Odds are, you can remember the first time you tried a masque that you picked up at the drug store. You went home, read the directions, and “Ooohed” and “Ahhhed” as you felt the coolness glide over your skin. Directions said to wait 15 minutes. You file your nails. It’s only been 3 minutes?! Ok.. clean up a bit. Is time slowing down, because you know you cleaned longer than 4 minutes. Slowly but surely the time ticks by to the full 15 minutes and by this time your skin feels TIGHT! The masque has hardened and you can see the oil the masque pulled out of your pores – cool! But, before you wash it off, you pull some funny faces in the mirror to watch the masque crack.. Am I right!? That was the BEST part! And, you just tried your first clay masque! Believe it or not, these are actually my least favorite type of masques to use.

There are 3 basic types of Masques; Cream, Clay and Gel. And I’m here to tell you what they do, who they’re good for, and why I’m not a fan of clay masques.

CREAM

These masques are fantastic for dry skin. They’re rich in oils and highly emollient. They can feel heavy, buttery, and are usually designed for anti-aging. Because for some reason skincare companies think all mature skinned ladies are dry, which is totally not true.. but I digress. Normal skinned ladies may get away with using these masques, but these are definitely a NO GO for oily/acne prone skin. Guaranteed breakouts waiting to happen for them. Dry skinned ladies just need to remember to add water in addition to oil to their skincare routines because your skin needs a healthy oil/water balance to perform at its best.

CLAY

Now, these masques are a classic for a reason. I’d say the majority of masques on the market are clay based and that’s a shame. There are so few people these masques are actually, really good for. The best skin type for clay based masques are oily/acne prone types as they pull all the oil out of your skin. Dry skin should steer clear of these since their skin struggles with producing enough oil as it is. Normal skin types would do best to just apply this to their T-Zone.  I’m not a fan of these masques because they pull EVERYTHING out of your skin including water and your skin NEEDS that healthy oil/water balance.  Clay masques are very dehydrating, and oily skin will compensate for the water loss by producing more oil. Exactly what you, and your skin, don’t want!

GEL

These are my favorite masques! Gel masques are great for ALL skin types and can target a number of skin concerns (anti-aging, acne, pigmentation), so pick your poison. These are water based, so they’re deeply hydrating and will leave your skin nice and plump. Use alone or follow a cream or clay based masque with a gel masque to rebalance the oil/water ratio in your skin.  You can’t go wrong with a gel based masque! And your skin will always look gorgeous after using one!

So, the big question is, what type of masque are you using at home? Are you using the best masque for your skin type? If not, switch it up and see how your skin reacts!
