Designer Spotlight | Roe and May

Why We ♥ Roe and May

It was only a few weeks ago that Rachael and I had the pleasure of meeting the creators of Roe and May, Katie and Jackie. The four of us hit it off so well that by the time our meeting was over we were planning a Sangria date at Rooftop. It’s no surprise that the creatives behind such a fresh, fun, not to mention beautiful, line of clothing are two super cool, down to earth babes.

Roe and May embodies the perfect combination of bohemian and sophistication. Roe and May strives to create effortless, versatile, trans-seasonal pieces expressing a modern time and its continuity. Designed in Long Beach, CA, and made in Los Angeles, CA, Roe and May creates styles epitomizing the laid back Southern California vibe with its stand out pieces. The designs will make you feel confident, feminine and beautiful. Katie and Jackie have a strong vision with an ever changing location in mind; every girl needs Roe and May in their closet, whether they are traveling the world or dreaming of it.

How long have you been designing/making clothing and at what point did you decide to make it your career?

Katie: I’ve been in the fashion industry for about 6 years now and always had an eye for design. I love working with fabrics, studying trends, and creating pieces I feel are missing from my closet. I am really inspired by travel, vintage prints, colors in nature, and the idea of creating thoughtful, effortless pieces. Roe and May started in an unusual way, about two years ago, so Jackie and I feel very lucky to be the faces behind such a cool and romantic brand.

Jackie: I have experience in retail sales and have always been in the front of the house. I have always been inspired to create my own designs, and I am excited to have the chance to finally do it.

What is the inspiration behind your designs?/What inspired your most recent collection?

Jackie: We are largely inspired by a laid back, beach-going lifestyle.  I like to infuse a causal, laid back feeling in everything that I do.  I find inspiration almost everywhere, especially living in sunny LA.

Katie: Our most recent collection, “the Sweetest Thing”, was inspired by a secret garden party. The collection was inspired by florals, ethnic prints, and geometric crochets; everything you would want to wear on a beautiful spring day. The bright colors speak Spring to us, and the fabrics we used fully complete the romantic, ethereal collection.

How did you decide on Roe + May as the name of the brand?

The name roe + may is very significant to us; is it a combination of each of our grandmother’s names. Roe for Rosemary, Katie’s grandmother, and May for Anna May, Jackie’s grandmother. Our grandmother’s were a big influence in both of our lives and this company is in honor of them.

How would you describe your personal style?

Katie: I would say it’s mostly romantic boho, casual. I love flowing maxi dresses, fun mini dresses, crochet or lace tops. But I also love the days I’m in a striped tee, skinny jeans and sneakers. Anything effortless, versatile and comfortable, which is what I want roe + may to be.

Jackie: I would describe my personal style as laid back with a touch of edge. I’m all about cool comfort. I have a dozen leather motto and jean jackets that I’ll pair daily with an airy sundress.  I love mixing soft and hard pieces.

Do you have a favorite Roe + May piece?

Katie: I have a few favorites! The Marbella for a fun night out, (the exaggerated sleeves are my favorite part!), the Ravello Mini for a date night with my hubby, and the Serene Cover-up for a beach day or trip to Palm Desert.

Jackie: The Loretta Maxi is my favorite roe +may dress. It’s the perfect weekend date night dress!
