Founded in 2012 and based in Southern California, Made in Mayhem offers carefully handcrafted leather accessories for men and women. Made in Mayhem was created from the founder’s love of rich leathers and luxury products. Luz Northrup’s manufacturing knowledge and experience with some of the best leather tanneries in the world allows her to continually create sophisticated, well-made goods that are eco-friendly. Made in Mayhem prides itself on creating high-quality leather goods that are designed and handcrafted in the USA. They follow the belief that style is timeless, and your accessories should be just as everlasting.
Made in Mayhem started with leather goods for men, and has now expanded into the women’s market. With everything from bags and wallets to sleek iPhone cases, their first ever women’s collection will be released this fall! Read on for our Q&A with owner/designer Luz Northrup.
Where does your artistic influence come from and when did you start designing?
Where does your artistic influence come from and when did you start designing?I can’t deny my influence comes from my surroundings. I live in a beautiful place, Southern California, and the colors and materials I use are influenced by everything there. I’ve also find inspiration as I travel around the country and see the unique differences from city to city and what things people choose to carry with them as they go about their day.
I started designing and working on graphic design projects during high school. After attending college, I started to get more into product design. I was interested in homeware, furniture, and fashion design, and 12 years ago during my last year of college I interned for design at New Balance in their Advanced Concept Department. It was there I got the fashion bug and I‘ve been in the fashion industry ever since.
At what point did you decide to make it your career?
At what point did you decide to make it your career?My dad’s entrepreneurship heavily influenced me from the time I was a child and I always thought of building my own business one day because of that. I was always thinking of creative ways to build and design things at my dad’s printing shop. The feeling of wanting to create never left me. I always wanted to be a designer and have my own business doing something creative.

What is the inspiration behind your designs?/What inspired your most recent collection?My designs are created on the foundation of function, quality and style. They are always fashionably designed to solve a problem and be our costumers’ next favorite accessory. Our current collection is inspired by two materials we found in our last inspiration trip; the super soft jet black and brown leather from Italy, and the vegetable tanned camel color leather from Mexico.
How did you decide on Made in Mayhem as the name of the brand?
How did you decide on Made in Mayhem as the name of the brand?Many people have asked us where Mayhem is, thinking it’s somewhere they can find on a map, and that’s exactly what we expected would happen. We wanted something that people could feel was a real place, but also somewhere that stood for something meaningful to what we’re about and how we got here. When you create something for the first time, you don’t always have all the answers. You never know what you’ll get, or what will happen with it. Most of all, It’s that anxiety and excitement tangled together that really pushes the way I design something or choose a certain material. It’s a state of mind in the creation process. It is mayhem. And that’s how we came up with Made In Mayhem.
How would you describe your personal style?
How would you describe your personal style?I am a creature of comfort and style; I am always looking for items that are unique but also easy to wear all day long. So, my closet is mostly black, navy and white, and living in California allows me to keep a good array of summer dresses that can be worn almost all year round.
Do you have a favorite Made in Mayhem piece?
Do you have a favorite Made in Mayhem piece?It’s hard for me to pick just one. My favorite wallet is the new Jefferson, which I’ve been excited to finally release. I also have two favorite bags, which are the Taylor pouch and the Garrison bag. I always carry a combination of the two. The Taylor is a great bag for transferring bags and also a great bag to transition from day to night.

What’s next for Made in Mayhem?
What’s next for Made in Mayhem?A new collection of bags will launch in November, and we are very excited about it. The collection was designed with women in mind and it includes and small clutch, a convertible cross body bag and clutch, a tote bag, a backpack and a weekender. The colors and materials are rich and soft with a touch of animal embossments and metallic inlay details. This collection will be available online and at select retailers November 15th.
