HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DESIGNING/MAKING CLOTHING & AT WHAT POINT DID YOU DECIDE TO MAKE IT YOUR CAREER?
I have been designing clothes for about 5 years now. I have always had a passion to design women’s apparel. I would go to a store and just say to myself “I could make that” OR “how can I make this better” and from then on the rest is history. My first collection launched in 2012 with a presence in about 50 boutiques. I took a little break in 2014 and now I am back in 2015 relaunching my line, and launching an online store. It feels really rewarding when you can wear something you’ve made and have random people compliment you, or when yousee someone for the first time wearing your designs.
WHAT ARE THE INSPIRATIONS BEHIND YOUR DESIGNS?/WHAT INSPIRED YOUR MOST RECENT COLLECTION?
My inspiration stems from the SoCal beach lifestyle, 1960s, Palm Springs, and the French Riviera. Having said that, my Summer 15 collection of beach-inspired mini dresses, maxi dresses, hot shorts, and ponchos are the artistic inheritance of that 1960′s Southern California beach girl to Brigitte Bardot dancing in the sand in St. Tropez. (I named on my my favorite dresses the Bardot).
WHERE DOES THE NAME MELISSA LAUREN COME FROM?
Melissa Lauren is me! And I knew it wasn’t a name I would get sick of 🙂
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
I would categorize my style as “casual chic”. I love to have an outfit I can throw on that works day to night. Being able to dress it up or dress it down was key for me in my summer collection. I also really love color, and I think people look great when they wear color!
WHAT MELISSA LAUREN PIECE DO YOU FIND YOURSELF WEARING THE MOST?
This is a tough one, I really love all my pieces. But I guess I would say the Bardot & Daisy Dress I wear the most.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MELISSA LAUREN CLOTHING?
I have a few trunk shows coming up in the LA/OC area. I am also currently working on Spring 16 – so many fun new prints!
